Commentary: Water conservation tips for the Walla Walla Valley

Water. We use five times the amount of water during the summer months compared to the rest of the year. Most of that water is directed for outdoor lawns.

We know the cost of the lush, green grass and blooms. The reason lies a few inches below the surface. Humor me while I geek out in my favorite topic of geology.

Our area is overlain by a layer of wind-blown silt called loess (pronounced luss). That loess originated in the peaks of Idaho along with their gems formed by the metamorphic process of intense heat and pressure.
