Who we are: 

The Washington State Conservation Commission (SCC) is a non-regulatory state agency that supports and coordinates our state’s 45 conservation districts and administers voluntary conservation programs. Together, the SCC and conservation districts provide incentive-based services that empower people across Washington to take actions that keep natural resources and working lands healthy for all.

What you will be doing:

You will be a valued team member working to coordinate and help develop the SCC’s new Riparian Plant Propagation Program (RPPP), which is intended to increase propagation of native trees and shrubs for use in riparian restoration projects statewide. The RPPP Coordinator will be responsible for supporting and growing the RPPP.

Duties

Some of the duties include:

Coordinating nurseries and restoration partners: 

RPPP development and implementation:

• Assist in the development of RPPP policies and procedures
• Develop and distribute RFPs to support propagation, cultivation, and restoration of native riparian trees and shrubs
• Conduct site visits of native plant holding locations and restoration sites to ensure that trees and shrubs are cared for and planted at their intended sites.
• Conduct research and analyzes data to identify native riparian tree and shrub needs and participant eligibility for continued program participation
• Assist in writing reports documenting how funds were expended and how trees and shrubs have been used

Program Communications Support:

• Develop new resources for and updates to the RPPP webpage
• Assists with SCC Communication team to highlight program and its successes

General Organizational Support Responsibilities:

• Participate in and contribute to all-staff meetings and agency-wide initiatives such as strategic planning
• Participate in and contribute to the organizational initiatives to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices across the organization and in our programmatic work

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Associate degree major study in horticulture, plant science, environmental science, agronomy, or related field

AND 

Four (4) years professional experience in horticulture, environmental science, natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or other closely related field

OR

Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, plant science, environmental science, agronomy, or related field

AND

Two (2) years of professional experience in horticulture, environmental science, natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or other closely related field

OR

Six (6) years of professional experience in horticulture, environmental science, natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or other closely related field

A Master’s degree will substitute for two years of experience and a Ph.D. degree will substitute for all of the required experience, provided the field of major study was in the specific specialty

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong project management, coordination, and communication skills
• Working knowledge of horticulture industry
• Familiarity and/or experience with riparian habitat restoration
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
• Gather and organize information
• Strong writing ability
